Back-Pack Angels in action against HUNGER!

The tragedy: “A husband and wife make the difficult choice to leave their two children in the ‘forest’. They could not bear the thought of their children dying in front of their eyes and they did not want their children to sense that they (the parents) were dying”.

This the reality in Somalia and the Northern parts of Kenya.  It is estimated over three million people are affected by drought, starvation, disease and death.

Somalis fleeing the drought are arriving at the Northern Kenyan border and into the Daadab Camps!

In a flight for hope from Somalia to the Kenyan border, close to 1400-1500 Somalis are arriving each day at the Kenyan refugee camps and roughly around 200 are processed per day. That leaves about 1300-1400 of those Somali people left without adequate attention or response.

The Response: Together with our partners, mobilize and organize volunteers, food & back–packs with basic survival items.

Target: Families with children breastfeeding mothers as a priority but also other individual refugees that are also affected.

Towards this, we have organized the needed items in manageable packs that include:-

BackPacks will contain a blanket, sheet, water bottle, mosquito net and shoes

Back-packs: Each back-pack costs $30 and will contain:

  • A blanket – To use for shelter while they wait to be processed & for relief.
  • Dacas (shoes) – To wear on their feet as people are without shoes.
  • A water flask – To be able to carry water sustain-ably.
  • A pair of bed sheets – To use in the night for sleep.
  • A Mosquito Net – Protect themselves from mosquitoes.

Food pack containing rice, beans, porridge and cooking oil

Food Packs: Each food back is $20 and contains-:

  • 2 Kg Rice
  • 2 Kg Porridge (uni mix)
  • 2 kg Beans
  • 2 litre Cooking oil
  • Pot/pan – To cook with

The call to action: Invitation to individuals, companies, churches, and any forms of groups/institutions to join in this effort to take action and do something about the grave situation caused by the drought, hunger and starvation.

How you can help:

  •  Individuals can commit purchase the listed items or make a monetary contribution:

- $30 (Kshs. 2,500) for a back-pack alone

- $20 (Kshs. 1,600) for a food-pack

- $50 (kshs. 4,000) for both packs – back-Pack and food pack.

  •  Share this message and raise awareness on the situation on your social networks (Facebook, twitter and other).
  • You can also choose to volunteer your skills – we have doctors, nurses, nutritionists and others volunteering.
  • You can mobilize a group of Back-Pack Angels that are willing to raise funds to purchase the items and also take the trip to go volunteer.

International persons can contribute in the following ways:-

Kenyans can contribute by:-

  • Making their MPESA donation to 0700-719164 (through localAid, one of the partners).
  • MPESA provides the avenue to contribute any amount and we encourage individuals to group up to buy a pack.

Our Partners:

  • Local Aid
  • International Christian Center (ICC)
  • Doctors For Hope (DFH)
  • HARDA
